Surviving two combat tours in Vietnam (’67-’69) after high

being able to serve in the Army with other HPHS ’65 grads Greg Barnes
and Bernie Kelly and ’66 grad Dan Kubican; marrying the most wonderful
woman in the entire world; being blessed with four of the greatest kids
in the world; and knowing that the above was all by the grace and mercy
of God! I retired in January 2007 in order to become a full-time
care giver for my wife who has been suffering from the effects of
Alzheimer’s disease for nearly 6 years. Currently working on writing
several books. Best: The friends (especially Leon Viands,
my brother Steve, Rita Gibson, and Vicki Gibb) that I had at HPHS and
the goofy things we all did. Then there was Mr. Vincent and his
constant bantering, or poor Mrs. Grumman and how we were always messing
with her head. Worst: that I was youthfully brain-dead, an
advanced underachiever, and didn’t have a clue. for most of my four

None. Highlights: After achieving slightly above average
grades all through high school and at MU, and managing to avoid having
to take any dreaded science courses, in 1994 I completed a degree
program with a 4.0 that included 10 hours of chemistry. It was a
wonderful thing to finally do what my Langley Park Elementary School
counselors and teachers had said I was capable of doing. I have devoted
the last 32 years to helping workers go home in the same shape they were
when they arrived at work. It’s a good feeling! Best:
Too many to single out. Special hello to my track and cross country teammates. Worst:
After the Prom, sitting with 5 other couples in the Blue Room of
the Shoreham Hotel in D.C. surrounded by a maitre d’, captain, two
waiters and a busboy. One of our dates had called ahead days earlier to
find out what a meal and beverage would cost (and we had it down to the
penny). Each of us gentlemen carried a $20 bill to cover the evening.
Unfortunately, we didn’t know that there would be a $3 cover charge to
listen to Roger Williams play the piano. Tip too? These guys expected
it! The bill was $126.73. I will remember that figure all my life. It
was like a scene out of a comedy as the bill was silently passed around
the table - each person’s eyes popping in turn as they looked at it
and passed it on. After pooling all our pocket change and asking our
dates for money, we finally got out without having to wash dishes.

Learning to drive in our family VW bus, trying to keep learning
that stick shift on the High Point hill!!!
I enjoyed my Math class and Spanish class and my Home Ec. Class.
I had the opportunity to visit Spain, but chose to marry my
sweetheart before he was headed to Viet Nam!
I remember meeting my friend Kathy Ellis (Honaker) early one
morning to give her all my life’s savings (not much) so she could run
away and get married! (Yes, they are still married, although she did not
graduate in `65’ from High Point).
My final exam in Spanish was on `how to make a wedding dress’ -
the pattern pieces were in Spanish!

dgeshwind@att.net. Management Consultant (self-employed), MBA.
Widowed. Children: Robyn 40. Grandchildren: Elijah 13, Emma 8 and
Sammy 3. Highlights: From a career standpoint,
striking-out on my own more than 20 years ago has been an incredible
adventure. I’ve been privileged to teach and consult with an array of
very talented people over the years and the fun hasn’t stopped.
Clients include government agencies, non-profits, and small
business owners in the Greater Phoenix Metro Area. On the personal
side—I’m wondering if there’s life after retirement--but, life is
good. Best/Worst: Oddly, my best memories gravitate to the
quality of our education. (I say “oddly” because I also remember
spending considerable time goofing-off in class.) Do you guys realize
how lucky we were to have such talented and dedicated teachers at HP?
The curriculum was tough and the teachers didn’t let us get
away with anything. (Well,
maybe our choral director, Mr. Porterfield, but that’s another story.)
As much as she terrified us, Ms. Biggs was probably one of the finest
English teachers you could hope for. I hope I’ve returned the favor to
a few of my students over the years.
(“Fewer dollars, less money” is just one of the echoes that
haunt me.) And Ms. McClelland, our POD teacher in senior year, taught us
to question and examine issues from other points of view before
formulating our opinions. I
hope I still do that—at least I pay my ACLU dues every year and try
not to tune-out diverse opinions. The list goes on. Can’t think of a
worst time. Time brings perspective.

Children: Daniel
35 and James 22. Highlights: Very thankful that I
have remained healthy since graduating from high school.
I as well as the rest of our class have witnessed the greatest
changes in science, technology, music, and politics. I have been able to
give back to society by volunteering for Connecticut Mission of Mercy
– which consists of a number of dentists in this area giving of their
time for three days to treat the uninsured and poor in this state.
I was a forensic dental volunteer after 9/11. Best: When
my father was on the President’s Council Against Drug Abuse and gave a
talk to the senior class and after his presentation he hoped that no one
in our class did drugs, and everybody on my side of the bleachers
pointed their finger at me. ( thanks you guys!) I had some great
memories on the track team with Ralph Higdon, Mike Van Kirk, Wayne
Howells, and Bruce Crotts and the rest of the guys.
Worst: Even
though I got decent grades, I always ended up in Mr. Chotiner’s
office. I will never forget
being told that high school would be the best years of my life!
Little did I know then – he was absolutely right!
As to the future – let’s all stay healthy and keep in touch.
