Leibe, Paul Curtis,
Lexington Park, MD
Newspaper
Reporter/Photographer. Some college, no degree. Married to Susan who is
a Hospital Emergency Room Technician. Highlights: One of
the biggest accomplishments for me in recent years was surviving triple
bypass surgery in ’99 that went bad and kept me in the hospital for more
than a month. Doing fine now, by the way. My professional highlight is
what I am doing now: after seventeen (17) years as a Police Office (in
Takoma Park, Annapolis and as an Anne Arundel County Sheriff’s Deputy) – I
left law enforcement and discovered the best job in the world-working for
a newspaper. I’ve been a Photographer and Writer for The Enterprise
Newspaper in St. Mary’s County for the past nineteen (19) years and loved
every minute of it. In March of this year my paper was named Newspaper of
the Year for our division by the Maryland-Delaware-Washington, DC (MDDC)
Press Association for the region (and wouldn’t my High Point English
teachers be amazed to see me now, after they basically gave up all hope of
my even speaking the language correctly, much less using it on a
day-to-day basis as my primary working tool!!) Best/Worst:
It has to be skipping school with friends one day in Spring of my senior
year and using the time to visit landmark’s in DC, only to be seen by a DC
policeman who happened to know me, and everyone with me that day. He
ratted us out and we were all suspended for a few days, which was actually
OK with me since not going to school was the whole idea anyway. Coming in
a close second was another day I skipped school, shortly before
graduation, to go to Chesapeake Beach with my then girlfriend (another
Class of ’65 grad, who will remain unnamed,) only to have my car blow up
in Upper Marlboro, leaving us stranded on the side of Route 4. We only
had enough money between us for her to get a ride home. I stayed behind,
trying to figure out some way to get the car back to Greenbelt without my
parent learning what happened. She later signed my yearbook, “I’ll always
remember U.M.”-----hmmmmmm, I wonder if she does?!!

of friends (that may have been after high school.) The good memories
revolve around friends, cars, girls and good times. If you have not read

8 years. I’ve “inherited” Grandkids, thanks to him. Renovate Locke’s
Mill, a historic grist mill once owned by Col. Fielding Lewis
(brother-in-law of George Washington) and located on the Shenandoah
River. Installed a 25’ diameter waterwheel, new basement floor, new
summer beams & sill beams, installed & rehabilitated a 1900’s band saw,
and renovations continue. Wrote an article about Locke’s Mill & was
published in the “Old Mill News.” Obtained county approval for a septic
system on mill property, after only three public hearings. It seemed
historical preservation and environmental perspectives were at odds, but
in the end we obtained an agreement. Kayak (have only a dozen kayaks!)
Host Locke’s Mill Bar-B-Que’s. Enjoying Grandchildren’s visit during
Holiday/Summers. Best/Worst: Memory of HPHS school days:
Don’t remember a lot…Now have Pre-Alzheimer’s. Here’s two fond memories:
1) while driving from Mighty Moe to Mighty Moe in my father’s Rambler
Station Wagon with Sandi (Johnson) Watt, I rear-ended the car in front of
us because we were looking at some cool sexy guys walking along the
street. Upon calling DAD to let him know, he grumped “God damn Fooling
Around!” How did he know we weren’t paying attention to the road? 2)
During a Girl Scout Light Packer’s trip, we were riding in a very old
limousine to our destination, a remote farm. We felt pretty special,
getting a ride in a roomy limo. Somehow we got off the road & stuck in a
muddy field near the farm. We pushed the HEAVY limo deeper & deeper &
deeper in MUD. Finally a tractor pulled it out, but we were covered with
MUD from head to toe. UCK! Interesting & Funny how I remember disastrous
events more than others. What’s with THAT?!?

and the club’s croquet museum. Best: I was extremely
introverted and shy in school and found being in a class of 1000 students
overwhelming, so I didn’t really know many. I went to school on the third
shift (10-4), which was great cuz you could ride your bike and watch
everyone else have to get on the bus early in the morning, but awful when
you were coming home in the dark during winter! Had at least two classes
in temporary buildings. Spent most of my time out of school with horses;
needed the later 60’s to come along and wake me up! Still consider myself
a product of the 60’s. Currently financially, my life sucks, but other
wise, I’m in a good place. I made a conscious choice to put my inner life
ahead of my outer life (Rita Mae Brown) and it’s a choice I don’t regret.

anything! There is peace, even in a terribly busy life. (Hard to explain.)
I do about 90% of the Artificial Insemination we do here. I drive
tractors, rake hay, band and tag calves, give injections, etc., etc. When
